AI visibility software, and how to pick the right one.
AI visibility software measures how often ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants name your business in their answers, and tracks that against the competitors named alongside you. Most tools stop at the measurement. The question worth asking on every demo is what happens after the dashboard shows you a low score, because the work that moves the number is listings accuracy, reviews, local content and structured location data, and very few vendors do any of it.

What AI visibility software actually does.
The category goes by several names. AI visibility tool, AI visibility platform, AI visibility solution, GEO platform, AEO tracker, LLM monitoring, AI search rank tracking. They describe roughly the same job.
AI visibility software runs a defined set of prompts through AI assistants on a schedule, records whether your brand is named in the answer and in what position, and reports that as a score you can track over time.
The good ones add three things on top: a named competitor set so the score has context, a location dimension so a 300-store brand does not get one national number, and the source URLs the assistant drew from so you know which pages earned the citation.
What every tool in the category should give you
- A repeatable prompt set, run on a fixed schedule rather than ad hoc
- Mention rate, whether you appear in the answer at all
- Position, whether you appear first or fourth
- Share of voice against competitors named in the same answers
- The cited source URLs behind each answer
What separates the serious ones
- Per-location scoring, not a single brand-level number
- A keyword set built around real customer intent in your category
- Prompt volume that scales with the size of your estate
- Honest limits on which assistants are genuinely covered
- A route from the finding to the fix, not just the finding
Seven things to compare before you buy.
There is no single best AI visibility tool, because the right answer changes with how many locations you run, how competitive your category is and whether you have a team to act on what the tool finds. These are the seven dimensions that actually separate them.
-
1
Prompt coverage and volume
A score built on ten prompts is a sample, not a measurement. Prompt volume needs to scale with your footprint, because a brand with 200 outlets in 60 suburbs has far more local intent to cover than a single-site business.
High prompt volumes are where this gets expensive rather than where it gets impressive. Every prompt run against an assistant costs the vendor money, so a tool offering unlimited prompts is either capping them somewhere you have not read yet, or pricing that risk into the licence. Get the arithmetic for your own estate before you sign.
Ask: how many prompts run per cycle, how that number changes as we add locations, and how the cost moves with it. -
2
How the keywords are chosen
Keywords decide everything downstream. Get the set wrong and you measure prompts your customers never ask. Some platforms hand you a generic starter list, some let you edit freely, some lock the set once tracking starts so the historical data stays comparable.
Ask: who builds the keyword set, can it be changed later, and what happens to the trend data if it is. -
3
Which assistants are really covered
Vendor marketing often lists every assistant on the market. Coverage is not the same as a logo on a page. Ask which ones return live, scored results today, and treat anything described as planned or in beta as not yet bought.
Ask: show me a live report, filtered by assistant, for a client in my category. -
4
Location-level granularity
A single national score is close to useless for a multi-location brand. Your Sandton store and your Gqeberha store compete against different rivals in different local answers. Without per-location scoring you cannot tell which outlets need work.
Ask: can I see a score and a local rank per outlet, or only one number for the brand? -
5
How share of voice is calculated
Share of voice is the metric most demos lead with, and it is easy to misread. It is location-dependent. Compare yourself against a competitor with twice your footprint and your share reads artificially low, because you cannot appear in answers for towns you are not in.
Ask: is the competitor set matched to my actual footprint, and how is the difference handled? -
6
Data cadence, and whether it fits your use
Running prompts costs money on every cycle, so every vendor picks a trade-off between freshness and cost. Daily is not automatically better. What matters is whether the cadence is fast enough for the decisions you plan to make on it.
Ask: how often do prompts run, and is that fast enough to track a six-week campaign? -
7
What happens after the score
This is the one that decides the value of the contract. AI visibility moves on accurate listing data, review volume and sentiment, local content and structured pages. A tool that only reports will hand you a diagnosis and no treatment.
Ask: who fixes the inputs, my team, an agency I still have to appoint, or you?
Measurement tools, and platforms that fix what they measure.
Almost every tool in this category is a measurement product. That is a legitimate thing to buy, as long as you know you are buying a report and you already have the team to act on it.
A measurement-only AI visibility tool
- Tells you your score and who is beating you
- Shows the prompts and the cited URLs
- Leaves the listings, reviews, content and schema work to you
- Usually cheaper per month, and usually self-serve
Right choice if you have an in-house local marketing team, or an agency already doing the execution, and you need the scoreboard.
Social Places, measurement plus the execution
- The same scoring, share of voice and citation tracking
- Plus the inputs that move it, run by our team: listings accuracy across 50+ platforms, review response, local social content and structured location data
- Per-location scores across your whole estate
- One team, one dashboard, one bill for the measuring and the fixing
Right choice if a low score needs to turn into work getting done rather than a report to forward on.

What the Social Places AI Visibility Tracker does, and does not, do.
Every criterion above, answered for our own product. We would rather you check it against the alternatives than find out in month three.
| Assistants covered | ChatGPT and Gemini, the two driving the most recommendation prompts. More are added as they emerge. We do not claim Perplexity or Claude tracking, although the pages we build are structured to be citable by them. |
|---|---|
| Prompt volume | Prompts are generated from your keyword set across the city and suburb values in your location list, so volume scales with the size of your estate. Pricing is based on prompt usage, and the estimated cost is shown before an audit goes live. |
| Keywords | We build the keyword set with you before setup, then lock it once tracking starts so your trend data stays comparable month on month. That makes the keyword workshop the most important hour of onboarding. |
| Cadence | Prompts run twice weekly. The underlying answers do not change daily, and the cadence balances freshness against query cost. Short campaign bursts are better served by a separate audit, which we will scope with you. |
| Location granularity | A visibility score and local rank for every outlet, ranked against its own local competitors, as well as the brand-level view. |
| Share of voice | Measured against a named competitor set. It is location-dependent, so we match the competitor set to your real footprint, or state the footprint difference when we present the number. |
| Prerequisite | Accurate location data. Prompts are generated from the city and suburb values across your locations, so an outlet with missing or wrong data produces no prompts and is left out. Correcting it later does not backfill the history, which is why the listings foundation comes first. |
| Large estates | We scope large rollouts with you before switching them on, so the prompt set, the cadence and the cost are agreed up front rather than discovered on the first invoice. |
Eight questions that separate the tools quickly.
Ask all eight of every vendor, us included. The answers, and how readily they come, tell you most of what you need.
- How many prompts run per cycle, and how does that scale when we add 50 locations?
- Who builds our keyword set, and can it be changed once tracking has started?
- Which assistants return live scored results today, not on the roadmap?
- Can I see a score and a local rank for a single store, not just the brand?
- How do you stop share of voice reading low just because a competitor has more sites?
- What does the score depend on that sits outside your product?
- When the score is low, who does the work that raises it?
- What is the total cost at our number of locations, including the prompt usage?
AI visibility software, answered.
What is AI visibility software?
AI visibility software runs a defined set of prompts through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini on a schedule, records whether your brand is named in the answer and in what position, and reports it as a trackable score. Better tools add a named competitor set for context, a per-location dimension so multi-site brands get more than one national number, and the source URLs the assistant cited.
What is the best AI visibility tool?
There is no single best tool, and any vendor who tells you otherwise is selling rather than advising. The right choice depends on three things: how many locations you run, whether you need per-location scores or a brand-level number is enough, and whether you already have a team to act on what the tool finds.
If you have in-house local marketing capacity, a measurement-only tracker may be all you need. If a low score has to turn into work getting done, choose a platform that also runs the listings, reputation and content inputs that move the score.
How is AI visibility software different from SEO rank tracking?
Rank tracking measures your position in a list of blue links. AI visibility measures whether you are named inside a single generated answer, where there is usually no list and often no click. Around 93% of Google AI Mode searches now end without a click (Semrush, 2025), so position one on a results page and absence from the AI answer can happen on the same query.
How many prompts and keywords should we be tracking?
Enough to cover the real intent in your category, multiplied across the places you trade in. For a multi-location brand the prompt count is a function of your keyword set and the number of distinct cities and suburbs you operate in, so a national estate generates far more prompts than a single site. That is why AI visibility products are usually priced on prompt usage rather than a flat seat fee.
The keyword set matters more than the raw count. A hundred prompts on the questions your customers actually ask beats a thousand on generic category terms.
How much does AI visibility software cost?
Pricing in this category is usually driven by prompt usage, because every prompt run against an assistant costs the vendor money. That means the honest answer depends on your keyword set, your number of locations and how often the prompts run. Social Places prices the AI Visibility Tracker on prompt usage and shows the estimated cost before an audit goes live. Talk to us for a figure against your actual footprint.
Do we still need AI visibility software if our SEO is strong?
Yes, because they are answering different questions. Strong SEO tells you that your pages rank. AI visibility tells you whether assistants name you when a customer asks for a recommendation, which draws on your listing data, your reviews and your structured location content as much as on your rankings. Brands with good SEO are regularly missing from AI answers for exactly this reason.
Which AI assistants can be tracked?
Coverage differs by vendor and changes fast, so check what returns live scored results rather than what is listed on a website. Social Places tracks ChatGPT and Gemini today, the two driving the most recommendation prompts, and adds others as they emerge. We do not claim Perplexity or Claude tracking, although the location pages we build are structured to be citable by them.
Can a single-location business use AI visibility software?
Yes. The AI Visibility Tracker is one of the few Social Places products that does not require a multi-location footprint. A single-site or national brand can be tracked using a custom location such as a city or a country instead of a store list.
