Google's Business Agent Puts an AI Sales Associate on Your Search Result

For years, the message button on a business listing was a quiet afterthought. Now Google is rebuilding it into something far bigger: an AI agent that chats with customers in your brand’s voice, answers their questions, and aims to close the sale, all from the search result itself.

On 11 January 2026, Google announced Business Agent, described in its own words as a virtual sales associate that lets shoppers chat with brands directly on Search. It went live with retailers like Lowe’s, Michael’s, Poshmark and Reebok, activated through Merchant Center. For now it is US-first and retail-led, but the direction it sets matters for every multi-location brand, wherever you operate.

“Messaging never really took off the first time, mostly because it lived in a separate app nobody opened. Put it inside one Gemini-powered interface that rolls out to every business by default, and the maths changes completely. The question stops being whether customers will message you and becomes whether your data is good enough for the AI to answer well on your behalf.” Ryan Haworth, CEO at Social Places

What Google actually announced

Business Agent is Google’s branded, Gemini-powered chat agent. Per Google, it answers product questions in a brand’s voice and connects retailers with shoppers at the moment they are deciding what to buy. At launch, eligible US retailers activate and customise it inside Merchant Center, and Google says that in the coming months they will be able to train the agent on their own data, access new customer insights, surface related offers, and even enable direct purchases inside the chat.

It arrived alongside a wider agentic-commerce push: a new Universal Commerce Protocol, new Merchant Center data attributes built for conversational discovery, and a Direct Offers ad pilot in AI Mode. The through-line is clear. Google is wiring AI agents into the buying journey, and the business profile is one of the places it speaks from.

And it is being spotted inside the Business Profile too

Beyond the official retail launch, practitioners have started seeing an AI-led messaging surface appear inside the Google Business Profile itself. Early sightings describe a rebuilt Messages page split into chats that need a human and chats already handled by an AI agent, plus a settings area to add a welcome message and conversation starters, and a promote option to drive customers into the chat from search.

Treat those specifics as early sightings, not confirmed product. Google has not published the Business Profile messaging layout the way it documented Business Agent. What is not in doubt is the pattern: an AI agent answering for your business, with a human stepping in only when it cannot resolve the query.

The AI answers first, you step in second

This is the shift that matters for franchise and multi-location operators. The default is no longer a customer messaging and waiting for a reply. It is an AI agent answering instantly from whatever it can find about that location, and escalating to you only when it gets stuck.

That is powerful when your data is clean and a liability when it is not. If a location’s hours are wrong, its services are out of date, or its profile contradicts your website, the agent will repeat those errors confidently to every customer who opens a chat. At one or two sites you would catch it. Across two hundred, you will not, unless something is watching the data for you.

Panel headed "AI answers first. You step in only when it cannot resolve." showing a Business Agent inbox where three customer questions are marked AI resolved and one is marked needs human, with a note that the default is now AI-first so your data must be right before you are even asked.

Why this raises the stakes on your data and content

An AI agent is only ever as good as what it reads. Two things now carry far more weight than they did when messaging was a manual afterthought. Your location data has to be accurate and consistent everywhere, because the agent answers from it and speaks on your behalf. And your website and structured content matter more, not less, because these agents pull from them to form answers. Google’s own framing of Business Agent leans on Merchant Center data and brand information for exactly this reason. The brands whose data and content were already in order will get accurate, on-brand AI answers. The rest will get confident wrong ones at scale.

Panel headed "Data drift means confident wrong answers at every location" showing a table comparing GBP hours, website hours and what the agent says across four locations with 2 of 4 marked wrong, and a note that nobody notices a drifted branch until customers start complaining about wrong information.

What multi-location brands should do now

Three priorities, in order. Get your location data clean and consistent across every site, since that is the source the agent draws from. Strengthen the structured content on your local pages and website, because that is the other well the AI reads from. And decide who owns escalations, so the chats the AI cannot handle actually reach a human who can.

This is the move from managing a static listing to managing an always-on, AI-fronted conversation at every location. It is coming to retail and Search first, but the groundwork is the same everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Business Agent?

Announced on 11 January 2026, Business Agent is a Gemini-powered AI that lets shoppers chat with a brand directly on Google Search, like a virtual sales associate answering product questions in the brand's voice. At launch it is available to eligible US retailers, who activate and customise it through Merchant Center.

Is this the same as Google Business Profile messaging coming back?

Not exactly. The officially announced product is Business Agent, which is retail and Merchant Center led. Separately, practitioners have reported an AI-led messaging surface appearing inside the Google Business Profile, but Google has not formally documented that layout, so those details should be treated as early sightings.

Why does an AI agent make data accuracy more important?

Because the agent answers customers automatically using your location data and content. Any error gets repeated confidently and at scale across every chat, which is far harder to catch across hundreds of locations than it is at one or two.

Is Business Agent available outside the US?

At launch it is US-first. Google has said it plans to expand capabilities and reach over the coming months, but it has not confirmed a South African or wider international rollout date.
